About the Artist
AGE 9
Even when I was 9 and in 3rd grade I was still being represented in the art show. I had actually been in the art show 5 times over my 13 years in the White Plains School District. Here is where I learned the struggle of constraint. One art teacher wouldn't let me express myself. My question is, how in the hootie patootie do you not let kids express themselves in art class? It's literally art, it's mainly expression of self and how do you confine people to what you want without commissioning them. The reason I feel so strongly about this is because the problem was that when we went to make our portfolio folders we had to do a self portrait. So I wanted to draw tiny angelic and hellish figures on my shoulders to which the inspiration had derived from watching so many cartoon characters and their internal struggles. Well when I was told no I tried to ask why and was immediately dismissed. Though this teacher was pretty much the opposite of what you would expect from an art teacher she introduced me to one of my favorite artist. She showed us one day some old vhs tape and in it showed Andy Warhol. When I got home I googled his work and I could not stop looking. I mean it was weird and new to me. I still had no idea who he was not really. At that time I thought he was just some old dead guy who died rich with good art skills. To this day I want to be so popular that some 3rd grader will see an outdated form of video with me in it and ask who is that. |
AGE 7
When I was 7 my art skills were weak. I had very little understanding of staying in the lines and well my color accuracy was nothing short of Billy madison and his blue duck. I was young what would you expect. Though I was not a prodigy someone saw talent in me. My kindergarten art teacher , Ms.Rose, and she helped me quite a lot. Ms.Rose taught me the most important financially beneficial advice I could ever receive. "A little dab'll do you". Five simple words to describe how to portion and conserve my materials. Now when Ms.Rose would tell us about this it often referred to Elmer's white glue, but it's something that's stuck with me for a long time. I have often used this phrase when painting. The first time I was in the art show was thanks to Ms. Rose and theres a funny story to that. First Art Show For my entire time knowing Ms.Rose she has always been great at leading her students in a positive direction. So when She told me to stop and took away my collage I was in shock. Well not in shock more upset yet compliant being only 7. I mean what could I have done she was an adult and she had good cause. What I hadn't understood, couldn't understand was that I was my own worst enemy. If Ms.Rose hadn't taken my art piece form me I would've ruined the work by adding way to much. The actual art would've been lost. In the most simple terms less is more. |
